KSL Match Notes - Stars v Diamonds

Game Four
Stars v Diamonds
13th August 2017

* Casualties today - Jenny Gunn for Diamonds with "whiplash injury" and Lizelle Lee for Stars with visa issues

* Diamonds won the toss and decided to bat.

* Atapattu doesn't last long - caught behind in second over off Kapp - 4/1

* Over 3 and Sophie Devine slashes at a wide one from Rene Farrell and is caught by Beaumont standing up - 5/2 - no ideal

* Lauren Winfield and Sune Luus (suddenly she is a number 4 bat!) get to the end of the powerplay - 28/2 on the board.

* 10th over and Winfield slogs sweeps Alex Hartley, but in the air, and Marsh takes the catch at deep square - 43/3

*Luus departs in the 12th top edging Sciver to Hartley at fine leg. Good knock though of 29 (32) - 48/4

* Back to Brunt and ADR to try and get Diamonds out of a hole. They take it to the 17th over and add 37, but ADR is bowled by Hartley for 13 - score still only 85/5

* Holly Armitage is out first ball. Hartley on a hat-trick. Anna Nicholls doesn't care as she reverse sweeps her first ball for a couple!

* 87/7 as Brunt runs herself out!!

* Diamonds make it to 100 before they are all out in the 20th over.

****

* Pinch-hitter Bryony Smith is out in the second over to Brunt - Stars 2/1. Marizanne Kapp in at 3.

* Kapp and Beaumont take Stars to uneventful 27/1 after first 6 overs

* 8th over and ADR gets Beaumont (21) with a back of the hand slower ball - Stars 37/2

* After 10 overs Stars are 51/2 - going along nicely but not likely to get a bonus point win (16 overs)

* 63/2 after 13 overs and Winfield finally throws the ball to Sune Luus - but she chooses to ball around the wicket and her over goes for 10!

* Brunt bowls a maiden, but the Stars know they have plenty of time.

* 11 off the 17th over means they only need five to win, and they get there in the next with consecutive boundaries to Kapp off Brunt, which ruins her figures - Kapp 48* and Sciver 34*

* Stars win by 8 wickets

  1. Great to see a women's game at the Oval again, and the pattern of home sides winning every game in KSL 2017 so far continues. I do think the KSL boundaries are set a bit short, 5-10 extra metres would be nice and not affect scores much at all.

Diamonds' score was always going to be at least 25 runs short, I think about 130 would have been a good score on that wicket. Both sides bowled quite well actually, although some of Diamonds' field placings looked strange and Brunt came back for her last over far too late. Brunt is doing so well recently she never seems to have a bad game. And Hartley's bowling was special yet again, her pitch map showed her amazing consistency of line.

Diamond's main issue appeared to be an inability to rotate the strike and pick up singles often enough. This is evidenced by the fact that both sides hit 12 fours, but Diamonds also hit 2 sixes yet lost.

Another remarkable thing about this match was the single extra scored (a leg bye in Stars' innings). No no-balls, byes or wides - an incredibly rare event even in T20. Anna Nicholls is proving to be a very decent 'keeper and Beaumont's wicket keeping is a little gem too - she may not be the tidiest at gathering in throws but she doesn't miss much behind the stumps. A couple of nice grabs here and a real talent with the gloves, on top of her batting!
