-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's all over for 2016!!

The Southern Vipers are the KSL champions having beaten the Western Storm in the final by seven wickets with seven balls to spare (Finals Day Report here). The plan is to extend the franchise competition to the 50 over format in May and June next year (since shelved), ahead of the World Cup here in England, and the T20 competition will remain just five matches again staged in August, although some games may be played alongside men's games (not a good idea in my view unless they are AFTER the men's games).

-----------------------------

Just three days until one of the three remaining KSL teams are crowned as the first-ever champions of the KSL. Who will it be? The Southern Vipers, who have made it straight to the final, or the Western Storm or the Loughborough Lightning, who have to meet each other to decide who will get to challenge the Vipers?
I've had a look at the current form and leading players here. No doubt you will all have your own favourites, but whoever you favour, why not try and get to Chelmsford on Sunday to give the girls the support they deserve.

Get your tickets (£5 for adults and £1 for u17s) here.

If you cannot make it then follow me on twitter @WomensCricBlog for updates through Finals Day and here on the blog for full match reports and photos (courtesy of Don Miles).

KSL Results & League Table (10th August 2016)

So it was the Surrey Stars that came out on top in their must-win clash with the Lancashire Thunder yesterday. It effectively ends the Thunder's hopes of a place in Finals Day, but keeps Stars hopes alive ahead of the final match on Friday against Loughborough Lightning.
Thunder managed to put just 102/9 on the board at Guildford and Stars cruised to a bonus point win losing just three wickets in overhauling the Thunder's total.

KSL Results (8th August 2016)

The Western Storm took their tally to two from three after they pulled off a remarkable run chase against the Surrey Stars. The Storm chased down 162 for victory with five wickets and two balls in hand, thanks to 74* from Stafanie Taylor and 53 from Lizzelle Lee. The Stars 161/6 had all been about the power hitting of Nat Sciver 90* off 45 balls.

For a full report on yesterday's match click here.

Today the Southern Vipers took on the Yorkshire Diamonds at the Ageas Bowl. The Vipers looked to be in a spot of bother at 19/4 on a horrible sticky Ageas Bowl wicket, but Suzie Bates and Arran Brindle added an unbeaten 99 for the fifth wicket, both finishing 45*. It always looked like it would be enough against a Diamonds side lacking in confidence with the bat. There was little or no resistance as they were blown away for 64, with recently-added Viper left-arm spinner Linsey Smith (wearing Georgia Adams' shirt) taking 4/10 off her four overs. Vipers have now won three from three; Yorkshire have lost three from three.

We will be at all three crucial games.

------------------------------------

KSL Results (5th August 2016)
Game 6 - In the early afternoon game Southern Vipers beat Lancashire Thunder by 11 runs. Vipers put 132/4 on the board thanks to 54* from Sara McGlashan and 29* from Arran Brindle. The pair added an unbroken 70 for the 6th wicket. In response Emma Lamb (34) and Amy Satterthwaite (31) kept Thunder in the hunt, but when they fell the Thunder charged subsided. Dani Wyatt (29) did her best to keep the chase going, but Thunder ended on 121/7.

Game 7
- Loughborough Lightning posted an impressive 158/8 against previously unbeaten Western Storm
Heather Knight did her level best to keep her Storm team in the hunt, but they were always behind the rate after a slow start. She scored a majestic 74 off 46 balls before she was unluckily run out backing up at the bowler's end. It ended the Storm's hopes, but they finished only 5 runs short.

KSL Update (5th August 2016)

Both Charlotte Edwards and Fi Morris from the Vipers' squad, will miss today's game against the Lancashire Thunder, following their collision on the field in the last game. Under the ECB's concussion guidelines they are forced to stand down for this game and will be reassessed by medical staff before the Vipers' next game on Monday. The Diamonds scored 134/5 thanks to 43 from Hollie Armitage and 29 from Lauren Winfield, who together added 74 for the first wicket. But they were both removed by Alex Hartley (2/18) as the Diamonds failed to capitalise on their good start and finished 20 runs light. Stars' openers Tammy Beaumont (47) and Bryony Smith (31) set up the Surrey chase, and Nat Sciver (29*) brought her side home in the 19th over just four wickets down.

KSL Update (2nd August 2016)

Martin Davies previews games 4 & 5
in the KSL

Loughborough Lightning v Lancashire Thunder

and

Surrey Stars v Yorkshire Diamonds

---
Yorkshire Diamonds' Hollie Armitage and Jenny Gunn have both been penalised under the ECB Discipline Code.

They were reported by umpires Ben Debenham and Tom Lungley during Yorkshire Diamonds’ Kia Super League match against Loughborough Lightning on 30th July 2016, for a Level One breach of the code (showing dissent at an umpire’s decision by word or action).

The penalty for these offences is a reprimand.

These penalties will remain on their records for a period of two years and the accumulation of nine or more penalty points in any two year period will result in an automatic suspension.

Both players were given out lbw, and both it appears thought they had edged the ball onto their pads and made the umpires aware of their displeasure at his decision. As far as we are aware this is the first time that any female cricketer has been sanctioned by the ECB Discipline Commission.

Full previews to come.....

KSL Match 3 (31st July 2016)
A magnificent bowling and fielding display by the Western Storm allowed them to cruise to a bonus point win over the Lancashire Thunder in their first KSL league game.

The Thunder won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a good Taunton wicket, in front of about 1,100 spectators, basking in glorious sunshine. The Storm did not let their new followers down as they applied pressure with tight bowling which was backed up by some magnificent catching. The first Thunder player to suffer was Hayley Matthews (7), who had been bogged down by Freya Davies (1/12) and Anya Shrubsole (0/14). Last ball of Davies' second over she attempted a flamboyant extra cover drive, but the ball skewed high off the face to deep cover where Lizelle Lee made great ground to take to the catch.

The Thunder finished the powerplay on 26/1 and got to 10 overs with 48/2 on the board, having lost Amy Satterthwaite (13) bowled by Jodie Dibble. But it was the wicket of Emma Lamb (25) when the score was on 63 to another stunning catch by Lee on the cover boundary off the bowling of Stafanie Taylor, that started a calamitous collapse. It was the first of four wickets for Taylor (4/14), who along with Heather Knight (3/11) bowled overs 12 through to 17 taking seven wickets for 10 runs. This included two further outstanding catches from Cait O'Keefe, at long on, and Knight off her own bowling, to remove Deandra Dottin and Dani Wyatt respectively. The last pair did manage to add 10 more runs, before Georgia Hennessy had Ellie Threlkeld caught behind by Rachel Priest.

With just 83 to chase the Storm lost Priest (2) early to Kate Cross, but Knight (23) and Taylor (14) seemed to be making serene progress until Taylor was deceived by West Indian teammate Matthews and was stumped. But this brought Fran Wilson (16) to the crease, who along with her skipper took the Storm to within 19 of the runs they needed to win before she was bowled by Dottin (3/8). In the same over Lee came and went, and in the next Knight was bowled by Sophie Ecclestone. Three wickets had fallen for one run. Another collapse looked possible, but Hennessy (11*) restored some calm, despite losing Sophie Luff (6), as the Storm got over the line in the 16th over to ensure a three point start to the season.

Lancashire Thunder 83 all out
Emma Lamb 25, Stafanie Taylor 4/14, Heather Knight 3/11
Western Storm 86/6 (15.3 overs)
Heather Knight 23, Deandra Dottin 3/8

KSL Match 2 (31st July 2016)
The Southern Vipers picked up a 3 point bonus win as they beat a rather forlorn Surrey Stars at the Ageas Bowl. Having won the toss the Stars took first dig, but their top order failed to show up as they fell to 28/5 in the ninth over. Skipper Nat Sciver (36*) and Rene Farrell (17*) managed to put a few runs on the board, but 85/6 was never going to be a competitive score. Georgia Adams (41), promoted to open in the absence of Charlotte Edwards who had left the field after colliding with a teammate whilst fielding, took full advantage of the opportunity, as she and Suzie Bates (25) put on 66 for the first Vipers’ wicket. Both fell, along with a first ball duck for Sara McGlashan, with the score in the 60s, but the Vipers got home four down in the 15th over to pick up the bonus point win.

Surrey Stars 85/6
Nat Sciver 36*, Tash Farrant 2/17
Southern Vipers 88/4 (15.2 overs)
Georgia Adams 41, Suzie Bates 25, Alex Hartley 2/17

KSL News (29th July 2016)
The final warm-up game before the KSL starts for real on Saturday is being played this afternoon (1pm) at The Emirates Old Trafford between Lancashire Thunder v Loughborough Lightning. It means the Lightning have two games in two days, so they will be hoping that all their players can come through this warm-up unscathed.
Brief Match Report
Game reduced to 11 overs per side due to rain before the start.
Lightning recovered from 18/3 after 5 overs (van Niekerk, Elwiss and Devine) to post 73/4 thanks to 50 partnership between Amy Jones (31*) and Ellyse Perry (21).
In reply Thunder made a good start through Hayley Matthews (19) & Emma Lamb (12) 29/0 after 4 overs, but after powerplay they stuttered, until some late hitting from Amy Satterthwaite & Danni Wyatt got it down to 12 needed from the last over, bowled by Perry, which they achieved with two balls to spare thanks to boundaries from Satterthwaite, to win by 6 wickets.

Major news coming out today is that Aussie Meg Lanning will not be playing for the Surrey Stars. According to a Press Release issued by the ECB, she has a right shoulder injury. The Stars are entitled to replace her with another overseas player, but with just 9 days before the first game it will be a tall order.

Satterthwaite was a late addition to the Thunder squad only signing in June when Aussie Sarah Coyte withdrew from the squad for personal reasons. Satterthwaite made her New Zealand debut in 2007 and has since played in 80 One-Day Internationals and 71 Twenty20 Internationals (T20I), recording two ODI centuries alongside boasting best T20I bowling figures of 6-17 against England.

Injury Updates

There are quite a few teams that have injury concerns over some of their players. Here are the ones we know about...

Lancashire Thunder - It looks increasing unlikely that Sarah Taylor will play for the Thunder in this first KSL season. We understand that she will not be replaced in the squad and that Kate Cross will skipper the Thunder, and Ellie Threlkeld will keep, in her absence.

Loughborough Lightning - Beth Langston missed the series against Pakistan with an ankle injury and has not played for Yorkshire in recent games. We understand that she is unlikely to feature for the Lightning.

Paige Scholfield has a quad injury and will not play for Sussex this Sunday, but the Lightning hope she will be fit for the start of the KSL.

Southern Vipers - Berkshire's Daisy Gardner played this Sunday but has a recurring knee problem. She hopes to be fit for the start of the KSL

Sussex's Georgia Adams returned to play for her county this weekend after missing 11 weeks with a groin injury. She showed no signs of any problem.

Surrey Stars - South African import Marizanne Kapp had an operation on her left calf in April, but has completed her rehab and has arrived fit and well in England.

Kent's Grace Gibbs has not played this season due to a knee injury, but is now bowling again and is fit for the KSL.

Western Storm - England's Anya Shrubsole missed the Pakistan T20 series with a side-strain and has not played for Somerset in recent T20 games, but we understand that she will be fit for the first Storm game on 31st July.

Yorkshire Diamonds - We have no reports of any injury concerns at the present time for the Diamonds.

  1. Just have to say again how excellent all these teams look. All of them have a chance at going through, I love the mix of players, it will depend more on how they balance the starting XIs. How they players gel, who captains their side most shrewdly and who holds their nerve at the death will have a big effect! It's very close on paper.

Maybe I'd give a slight edge for the Western Storm with a very solid, experienced team; and perhaps Diamonds are vulnerable to a low score through lacking batting depth (although if Winfield gets going... ), likewise Thunder maybe a bit short without Sarah Taylor; otherwise all fairly equal. "My" team will mainly be Stars (very decent side if not the most experienced!) with a bit of Vipers thrown in (strong and experienced but my only worry for them is that their batsmen don't appear to be in great form) - I'm fairly hopeful at least one of them can do something in the competition.

  3. Thanks for all this very helpful info. Especially the review of the latest games. I have gone to the tournament home site several times and scorecards still not available! Your observations are always very much worthwhile and much appreciated!

  4. Apologies if I have missed it but could you explain how the points system works, what are the bonus points for?
    Thank you

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For a win with bonus point there will be 3 points; for a win with no bonus point there will be 2 points and for no result each team will get 1 point. There are no points for a loss. So how is the bonus calculated? Here I have to quote the rules (sorry):-
"The team that achieves a run rate of 1.25 times that of the opposition shall be awarded one bonus point. A team's run rate will be calculated by reference to the runs scored in an innings divided by the number of overs faced."
What this means is that if a side is batting second they will need to chase down the runs needed within 16 overs to achieve a run rate of 1.25 that of their opponents. If a side bat's first then they will need to bowl out or restrict their opponents to 80% of their score - eg if they score 150, then they will have to restrict their opposition to 120 (150 x 0.8). Calculators will be needed if and when rain shortens games or intervenes half-way through games.

Basically side batting second has to get runs in less than 16 overs & if side bwoling second can hold opposition to 0.8 of their score they will get a bonus point win.

      Hope this helps.
